Every year, from late October until March, female sea turtles leave the safety of the ocean and slowly crawl onto the beach under the cover of darkness.
Their journey may have taken thousands of kilometres across the Pacific Ocean.
Yet somehow, they always find their way home.
Scientists believe sea turtles use the Earth’s magnetic field like a natural compass, allowing them to return to the very beach where they were born decades earlier.
Here in Turtle Bay, we are privileged to witness this incredible journey every nesting season.
For us, every set of tracks in the sand tells a beautiful story.

The Miracle Beneath the Sand
A New Generation Begins
After carefully choosing the perfect location above the high tide line, the mother turtle begins digging her nest using her powerful rear flippers.
Once the nest is ready, she gently lays around one hundred soft, white eggs deep beneath the sand.
When she has finished, she carefully covers the nest, disguises the area to hide it from predators and quietly returns to the ocean.
Her work is done.
She will never see her babies.
From this moment on, the future of the nest depends entirely on nature—and on the people committed to protecting it.

Every nest we discover receives its own identification and is carefully recorded.
We document the nesting date, location, estimated hatching period and all important observations throughout the incubation process.
After the hatchlings emerge, we record how many baby turtles successfully reached the ocean.
These records are officially reported to the responsible government authorities in Palawan and become part of the long-term monitoring of local sea turtle populations.
Accurate data helps scientists understand nesting activity, improve conservation efforts and protect future generations of sea turtles.

Once a nest has been discovered and officially documented, our work truly begins.
Sea turtle eggs face many natural dangers before they have a chance to hatch. Monitor lizards, stray dogs, wild birds and other predators can destroy an entire nest within minutes.
To give every hatchling the best possible chance of survival, each nest is carefully protected.
Our team installs a secure protective enclosure that allows the eggs to develop naturally while preventing predators from digging into the nest.

Each morning, our team carefully checks every protected nest for the first signs of movement.
Sometimes nothing happens.
Sometimes the sand begins to tremble.

To help them reach the sea safely, our team carefully prepares a natural sand pathway leading directly towards the beach.
We never place the hatchlings into the water.
Instead, they make this important journey by themselves, exactly as nature intended.
Scientists believe these first moments help young sea turtles memorise the unique magnetic signature of the beach where they were born.
Many years from now, the survivors may return to Turtle Bay to begin the cycle once again.
Watching hundreds of tiny turtles disappear into the waves is one of the most emotional experiences we have ever witnessed.

Only One Will Return

A single sea turtle nest may contain around one hundred eggs.
Over an entire nesting season, thousands of hatchlings may enter the ocean from Turtle Bay.
Yet nature is unforgiving.
Many hatchlings become food for birds before they even reach the water.
Others fall victim to fish, larger marine animals or changing ocean conditions during their first years at sea.
Scientists estimate that only about one out of every 1,000 hatchlings will survive long enough to return as an adult and lay eggs of its own.
Every tiny turtle reaching the ocean is therefore much more than a beautiful sight.
It is another chance for the future.
